Our History

Timeline: Community Alliance Against Family Abuse (CAAFA)

April, 1998Led by Co-Founders Germaine Steudler and Sharon Stinard, a group of local citizens worked together to address the issue of domestic abuse in Northern Pinal County. Through hard work, dedication and passion, the Community Alliance Against Family Abuse (CAAFA) was incorporated.

October, 1999CAAFA obtained a 501(c)(3) status from the IRS.

1999 - 2001CAAFA's Board of Directors developed essential community support for the non-profit agency.

July, 2001United Way of Pinal County began funding counseling services, support groups and CAAFA's 24-Hour Crisis Line.

December 23, 2002Germaine Steudler, Co-Founder of CAAFA, past away. The Germaine Steudler Memorial was established at CAAFA, which provides financial resources for program participants seeking higher educational opportunities.

2001 - 2003CAAFA provided counseling services and support groups, and responded to CAAFA's 24-Hour Crisis Line. January, 2003 Arizona Department of Health Services began funding the first professional staff, which included: Executive Director, Advocate and Administrative Assistant.

June, 2003CAAFA held the first CAAFA Safe Home Network (CSHN) meeting.

October, 2003CAAFA opened the Safe Home, which became the first shelter facility in Northern Pinal County. CAAFA began relying on volunteers to provide administrative support and created the Community Coordinator position, which became responsible for developing collaborative community partnerships.

April, 2004CAAFA named Program of the Year by United Way of Pinal County. CAAFA named 2004 Non-Profit Constellation Award by Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino.

July, 2004Department of Economic Security began funding the Safe Home.

September, 2004CAAFA Safe Home Network led a collaborative community grant, which secured over $265,000 for transportation services in Apache Junction. CAAFA purchased a van, which is used to transport program participants to essential appointments.

October, 2004CAAFA broke ground on the new Safe Home.

February, 2005CAAFA's Safe Home Network led a collaborative community project, which created the Human Resource Directory for Northern Pinal County.

April, 2005CAAFA named Program of the Year by United Way of Pinal County.

July, 2005CAAFA hired a Prevention Specialist and began providing early education and prevention services.

October, 2005CAAFA opened the new Safe Home, which provides a safe haven for 16 women and children a night. Pictures of the Safe Home are available on this website.
